Explore the relationship between fractions and volume! This set includes a 10 x 10 x 10cm cube with a different print on each side (a 10×10 grid, a 5×5 grid, a 3×3 grid and a 2×2 grid). Also included are plastic cubes in different sizes to fill the grid cube. Included are 1000x blue 1cm cubes, 125 yellow 2cm cubes, 27 green 3.3cm cubes, and 8 red 5cm cubes.
Demonstrate that 1000 cubes of 1cm3 have the same volume as 125 cubes of 2cm3, or 27 cubes of 3cm3. Students can explore the relationship between the size of the cube and the number of cubes required to fill up the same space.
Explore that when the cube is only filled half with cubes, there is a relation between 500/1000 cubes and 4/8 cubes. Or visualise that when 20% of the clear cube is filled, this can be 200/1000 cubes, but also 25/125 cubes. See how 25% of the cube can be represented with 25/1000 cubes, or 2/8 cubes. Let students find different ways to fill the cube to a specific percentage.
